At midnight in your own time zone, not New York midnight. This page reads that zone off your request, so the puzzle number you see is the one live where you are — which is why readers in Auckland and Los Angeles can be looking at different words on the same calendar date.
How is the Wordle number worked out?
It counts days since the game launched on 19 June 2021, which is the number the share grid prints — not any internal id. We read it off the stored puzzle rather than adding one to the last number we saw, so a day we missed can never shift every number after it.
