Wordle Today: Hints and Answer for #1,877 — August 9

Updated for Sunday, August 9, 2026 · edited by Tracy Bennett.

Five rungs, softest first: the shape of the word, then its vowels, then facts counted straight off it, then what it means, then its first letter. The answer itself sits folded at the very bottom, so nothing above it can spoil a guess you still have left.

How Wordle works, in short

Six guesses at a five-letter word. Green means right letter, right place; yellow means right letter, wrong place; grey means the letter is not in the word at all. Spend the first guess on vowels and common consonants rather than on a word you hope is correct, and treat guess two as information too: a second opener made of five fresh letters usually leaves you three confident guesses instead of one lucky one. Our full Wordle guide covers opening words and hard mode.

NYT Wordle questions we get asked

When does a new Wordle appear?

At midnight in your own time zone, not New York midnight. This page reads that zone off your request, so the puzzle number you see is the one live where you are — which is why readers in Auckland and Los Angeles can be looking at different words on the same calendar date.

How is the Wordle number worked out?

It counts days since the game launched on 19 June 2021, which is the number the share grid prints — not any internal id. We read it off the stored puzzle rather than adding one to the last number we saw, so a day we missed can never shift every number after it.

How many vowels are in the Wordle answer for August 9?

1. The answer contains two vowels, which appear in separate parts of the word.

What is a hint for Wordle #1,877?

Referring to a dull, awkward, or unappealing sound, often associated with a mechanical or metallic noise.

What is the Wordle answer for August 9?
