Privacy notice
TodayHint is a static site with no accounts, no sign-up, and no user-submitted content. This page says exactly what is and isn't collected today, what changes the moment analytics goes live, and how the one piece of client-side storage this site uses actually works. See our About page for who runs this site and how hints are made. If a feature isn't described below, it isn't running.
What this site collects right now
As of today, TodayHint sets no analytics cookies and runs no tracking script. Visiting the site does not create an account, does not require an email address, and does not write anything about you to any database this site controls. The only two things happening in your browser are standard web requests to load the page — handled by Cloudflare, described below — and a small piece of browser-local storage that remembers which hints you've already revealed on a puzzle page, described in its own section further down.
Cloudflare and server logs
TodayHint runs on Cloudflare's edge network, which is standard for any website: every request — yours included — passes through Cloudflare to reach this site, and Cloudflare processes technical request data (IP address, user agent, timestamp, requested URL) as part of serving the page and protecting it from abuse. This is ordinary infrastructure-level logging, not an analytics or advertising product, and it happens whether or not you interact with the page. We don't operate a separate analytics pipeline on top of it today. Cloudflare's own handling of this data is governed by its privacy policy, not ours, since we don't control how long Cloudflare itself retains request-level logs.
localStorage: hint-reveal state
On puzzle pages like today's Strands hints, tapping a hint or an answer to reveal it is remembered in your browser's localStorage, so refreshing the page doesn't re-hide what you've already opened. That's the only thing this site's own client-side code writes to your browser. It never leaves your device: it isn't sent to our servers, isn't attached to any request, and isn't readable by any other site. Clearing your browser's site data for todayhint.com deletes it instantly, and nothing is lost on our end because we never had a copy.
Analytics: Microsoft Clarity (not yet active)
TodayHint plans to use Microsoft Clarity to understand how the site is actually used — which hints get opened, where people get stuck, that kind of thing. As of today, Clarity is not active: no Clarity script loads, and no Clarity cookie is set on this site. This section exists so the plan is disclosed before it ships, not only after.
When Clarity is turned on, it will set cookies to distinguish one visit from another and will record session replay and heatmap data — clicks, scrolling, and which hints get revealed — to help us improve the site. Microsoft acts as a data processor for that data, governed by the Microsoft Privacy Statement. This page will be updated the moment that switch flips, and the honest state of "is Clarity running right now" will always match what is written here.
Who else sees anything
Cloudflare, as described above, for hosting and request handling. Nobody else. TodayHint doesn't send anything to The New York Times or any puzzle-data provider — the data flow runs the other way, from their published puzzle files to our servers, and nothing about you travels with that request.
Your rights and contact
Because this site currently stores nothing identifiable about you, there is usually nothing to access, correct, or delete. If that ever feels wrong, or once Clarity is active and you want to opt out, email contact@todayhint.com.
Changes
Material changes to this notice — in particular Clarity going live, or any new category of stored data — will be published here before they take effect, not after. The version on this page is the one currently in force. See also our terms of use.
